occupation

with Claudia Mannigel

Presented during the exhibition Entres Autres, December 7-8, 2007 in the Hubert-Aquin building at UQAM, Occupation Sonore was an attempt to transform transitional architecture into public sound sculpture. After a period of testing to locate resonant frequencies and experiment with speaker arrangements and performance techniques, two presentations were given during which visitors were encouraged to explore the space and assist the artists. Sine waves were diffused on five speakers tuned within a narrow range around the resonant frequency of an overhead heating tube. The resulting rhythms were amplified by contact microphones placed on the heating tube and simultaneously experienced by visitors as binaural beating which shifted as they moved across the bridge.
